The Süddeutsche Zeitung venerated him as an “early music icon” and the New York Times praised him as “an enlightenment in a sea of mediocrity”. Reinhard Goebel specializes in the repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries and as a mediator of historical performance practice for modern symphony and chamber orchestras as well as early music ensembles and as an inexhaustible source for repertoire treasures is a specialist in demand worldwide. Since May 2018 he has been the artistic director of the Berlin Baroque Soloists, with whom he has enjoyed a long artistic collaboration. The joint re-recording of the Brandenburg Concertos for Sony Classical (2017) with the Berlin Baroque Soloists was celebrated by the press. Reinhard Goebel was the founder and director of the legendary Musica Antiqua Köln for 33 years. With his ability as a conductor to uniquely amalgamate a passion for music with a meticulous knowledge of sources, he inspires, captivates and polarizes the contemporary orchestral landscape. When asked in the interview whether too much knowledge could damage the music, he replied: »That can’t be, knowledge is the source of inspiration! That’s stunning. […] Knowledge can be intoxicating. And knowing more is even more intoxicating.« (VAN Magazine, March 2, 2016). In the coming seasons he will make guest appearances with the WDR and HR Symphony Orchestras, the German Radio Philharmonic Saarbrücken, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, the Budapest Festival Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic Prague, the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, the Tapiola Sinfonietta and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra . Reinhard Goebel has performed with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Saxon State Orchestra in Dresden, the German Radio Symphony Orchestras in Frankfurt (HR), Cologne (WDR), Hanover (NDR), Munich (BR), Leipzig (MDR) and Saarbrücken (SR ), the Academy of Ancient Music, and the Taipei, Melbourne, and Sydney Symphony Orchestras. He is the successor of Nikolaus Harnoncourt Professor for historical performance practice at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. CD recordings with Reinhard Goebel are available from all major labels: Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, Deutsche Grammophon, Sony BMG and Oehms Classics. In February 2008, Reinhard Goebel was awarded the important »Diapason d’Or« with the South Korean violinist Yura Lee and the Bavarian Chamber Philharmonic for his CD »Mozart in Paris«, which was released on the occasion of the 2007 Augsburg Mozart Festival he had previously received for numerous recordings of his Musica Antiqua Köln. In the spring of 2010 he was again awarded the Diapason d’Or for his newly edited Deutsche Grammophon recording »Le Parnasse Francais« with Musica Antiqua Köln, which had already been awarded to him for the original recording from 1978. Lübeck honored Reinhard Goebel with the Buxtehude Prize in 1984 and Magdeburg with the Telemann Prize in 2002. In 1980 he received the Siemens Promotion Prize and in 1997 the State Prize of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia from the hands of the later Federal President Johannes Rau. In April 2007, Reinhard Goebel accepted the IAMA Award in London. He is the winner of the Bach Medal of the City of Leipzig, which was awarded to him in 2017, among other things, for being a pioneer and “exploring the repertoire away from the established names with irrepressible zeal”. In 2015 he was named one of the top 20 violinists of all time by BBC Music Magazine.
